10/22 Basic Disassembly/Assembly
|
|
| Before we begin, please bear in mind that my 10/22 is not a stock gun. I have added a Butler Creek pistol grip with a folding stock and also a Butler Creek extended magazine release. Neither of these modifications make any significant differences as far as the basic disassembly of the 10/22. With that out of the way, on to the disassembly. | |
| 1. Properly clear your rifle (Place weapon on "safe", remove the magazine, pull or lock the bolt to the rear, visually and physically inspect the chamber to ensure no round is inserted. Release the bolt. |
|
| 2. REMOVING THE STOCK Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the barrel band at the front of the stock |
|
| Flip the rifle over, locate the screw in front of the magazine well. Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the screw. |

| Separate the stock from the rifle by pulling gently on the stock | ![]() |
| 3. REMOVING THE TRIGGER GROUP Using a small punch, remove the two pins holding the trigger group in the receiver. The trigger group may now be removed. Ensure that the trigger is set to "safe" so the hammer stays in position. |

| 4. REMOVING THE BOLT & CHARGING HANDLE Using a punch, remove the final pin in the receiver. This pin prevents the bolt from following too far to the rear during operation. |
![]() |
| Pull the charging handle as far back as you can. The bolt may now be lifted completely out of the receiver. The charging handle can be removed through the ejection port on the right hand side of the receiver | ![]() |
| Trigger group, bolt, and charging handle are now out of the receiver. (Note the lack of finish inside my receiver--too strong of a solvent used in the past!) | ![]() |
| 5. REMOVING THE BARREL (Optional, but makes cleaning
both the barrel and receiver easier) Locate the two hex screws below the barrel in front of the receiver. Remove these screws using a hex key. The block will come off when you pull the hex screws out. |

| At this point, basic disassembly has been completed. Now for assembly procedures |
|
| 1. REINSTALL THE BARREL (If you did not remove the barrel, skip this step) Push the barrel back into the receiver, place the block in position, insert the two hex screws and tighten with a hex key |
|
| 2. INSERT BOLT & CHARGING HANDLE Insert the charging handle into the receiver through the ejection port. There is a detent that end of the charging handle fits into. |
![]() |
| Using a small screwdriver or punch, slide the spring towards the rear of the receiver while pulling back on the charging handle. Do this until the charging handle is fully to the rear of the receiver. This is tricky at first but you will soon become used to it. | ![]() |
| While the charging handle is fully to the rear, place the
bolt in the receiver, the rear of the bolt first. Carefully push the bolt
into the receiver until you hear an audible "click". The bolt and charging
handle are now connected. Check this by moving the charging handle back and
forth, ensuring the bolt moves with it. Insert the large pin into the rear of the receiver so the bolt does not inadvertently come loose. |

| 3. ATTACH TRIGGER GROUP Line up the two holes of the trigger group with the two holes in the receiver. Replace the pins. |
|
| 4. ATTACH STOCK *Be careful that the trigger pins or bolt retention pin do not fall out of the receiver. Some like to cheat a little with scotch tape. Slip receiver into the stock. Insert the screw forward of the magazine well and tighten. Place barrel band on the front of the stock, tighten screw. Rifle is now re-assembled! |
